Chapter 53
The Rejected Servant
1 O Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 We announced [him] before him as a young child, like a root in thirsty ground; he has no form nor glory. And we saw him, and he had no form nor beauty. 3 But his form was dishonored, failing beyond all men; being a man under a stroke and knowing [how] to bear sickness; because his face was turned away, he was dishonored and not accounted [as anything].
Substitutionary Suffering
4 This one bears our sins and is pained for us, yet we accounted him to be in toil and under a stroke and in affliction. 5 But he was wounded because of our lawless deeds and has been made weak because of our sins; the discipline of our peace was upon him; by his welt we were healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; each man has gone astray in his own way; and the Lord delivered him over to our sins.
The Silent Sacrifice
7 And he, because of being afflicted, does not open his mouth; like a sheep he was led to slaughter, and as a lamb is voiceless before the one shearing it, so he does not open his mouth. 8 In [his] humiliation his judgment was taken away; who shall describe his generation? Because his life is taken up from the earth; because of the lawless deeds of my people he was led to death. 9 And I will give the wicked in place of his burial, and the rich in place of his death; because he committed no lawlessness, nor was deceit found in his mouth.
Vindication and Reward
10 And the Lord desires to cleanse him from the stroke. If you give [an offering] concerning sin, your soul shall see a long-lived seed. And the Lord desires to take away 11 from the toil of his soul, to show him light and to form [him] with understanding, to justify the righteous one who serves many well; and he himself shall bear their sins. 12 Because of this, he shall inherit many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong; because his soul was delivered over to death, and he was accounted among the lawless; and he himself bore the sins of many, and because of their sins he was delivered over.
