Chapter 11
The Father and the Rebellious Child
| 1 Because Israel was an infant, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called back his children. 2 Just as I called them, so they departed from my face; they were sacrificing to the Baals and offering incense to graven images. 3 And I bound the feet of Ephraim; I took him up upon my arm, yet they did not know that I was the one healing them. 4 With the destruction of men I drew them, in the bonds of my love; and I will be to them as a man striking someone upon his jaws; and I will look toward him, I will prevail for him. |
The Consequences of Refusal
| 5 Ephraim dwelt in Egypt, and Asshur—he is his king—because he did not wish to return. 6 And the sword grew weak in his cities and rested in his hands, and they shall eat because of their own counsels. 7 And his people hang [in suspense] because of their dwelling place; and God shall be wroth against his precious things, and He shall not exalt him. |
The Divine Compassion
| 8 How shall I deal with you, Ephraim? Shall I shield you, Israel? How shall I deal with you? Shall I make you as Admah and like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me, my regret is profoundly stirred. 9 I will not act according to the fury of my wrath; I will not abandon Ephraim to be wiped out. For I am God and not man; the Holy One in your midst; and I will not enter into the city [to destroy]. |
The Roar of the Lion and the Return
| 10 I will go after the Lord; He shall roar like a lion—for He Himself shall howl, and the children of the waters shall be amazed. 11 And they shall be amazed like a bird coming out of Egypt and like a dove from the land of the Assyrians; and I will restore them to their homes, says the Lord. 12 Ephraim has surrounded me with a lie, and the house of Israel and Judah with impieties. Now God has known them, and they shall be called a holy people of God. |
