The Temple Construction in Jerusalem
| 1 And Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared to David his father, in the place which David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 2 And he began to build in the second month, in the fourth year of his reign. |
Dimensions and Materials of the Temple
| 3 And these are the foundations Solomon laid for the building of the house of God: the length in cubits according to the old standard was sixty cubits, and the width twenty cubits. 4 And the porch (ailam) in front of the house, its length across the front of the house's width was twenty cubits, and its height was a hundred and twenty cubits; and he overlaid it on the inside with pure gold. 5 And the main hall he paneled with cedar wood and overlaid it with pure gold, and he carved palm trees and chains (chalasta) upon it. 6 And he adorned the house with precious stones for glory; and the gold was gold from Parvaim. 7 And he gilded the house—the walls, the doorposts, the ceilings, and the doors—with gold, and he carved Cherubim upon the walls. |
The Holy of Holies and the Cherubim
| 8 And he made the room of the Holy of Holies; its length across the width of the house was twenty cubits and its width was twenty cubits, and he overlaid it with pure gold for the Cherubim amounting to six hundred talents. 9 And the weight of the nails—the weight of one was fifty shekels of gold. He also gilded the upper chambers with gold. |
| 10 And in the room of the Holy of Holies he made two Cherubim, a work of wood, and he overlaid them with gold. 11 And the wings of the Cherubim, their length was twenty cubits: one wing of five cubits touched the wall of the house, and the other wing of five cubits touched the wing of the other cherub. 12 And the wing of the first cherub was five cubits, touching the wall of the house, and the other wing was five cubits, touching the wing of the other cherub. 13 And the wings of these Cherubim were spread out for twenty cubits; they stood on their feet, and their faces were turned toward the main hall. 14 And he made the veil of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen, and worked Cherubim into it. |
The Two Bronze Pillars
| 15 And in front of the house he made two pillars, thirty-five cubits in height, and their capitals were five cubits. 16 And he made chain-work (serserōth) in the inner sanctuary (dabir) and placed them on the capitals of the pillars; and he made a hundred pomegranates and placed them upon the chain-work. 17 And he set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the right and one on the left; and he called the name of the one on the right "Stability" (Katorthōsis) and the name of the one on the left "Strength" (Ischys). |
