Chapter 2
The Three Days and Nights
| 2.1 [MT 1:17] And the Lord commanded a great sea monster (kētei) to swallow Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the sea monster three days and three nights. |
| 2 [MT=2:1] καὶ προσηύξατο Ἰωνᾶς πρὸς κύριον τὸν θεὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας τοῦ κήτους | 2 [MT 2:1] And Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the sea monster. |
The Cry from Hades
5 [MT=2:4] καὶ ἐγὼ εἶπα Ἀπῶσμαι ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν σου· ἆρα προσθήσω τοῦ ἐπιβλέψαι πρὸς τὸν ναὸν τὸν ἅγιόν σου; | 3 [MT 2:2] And he said: "I cried out in my affliction to the Lord my God, and He heard me; out of the belly of Hades (hadou) [You heard] my cry, You heard my voice. 4 [MT 2:3] You cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea, and rivers encircled me; all Your surges and Your waves passed over me. 5 [MT 2:4] And I said, 'I have been thrust away from Your eyes; shall I indeed look again toward Your holy temple?'" |
The Descent to the Foundations
| 6 [MT 2:5] "Water was poured around me even unto my soul; the deepest abyss encircled me, my head sank into the clefts of the mountains. 7 [MT 2:6] I went down into the earth, whose bars are eternal barriers; yet let the corruption of my life ascend [out], O Lord my God." |
The Return to the Temple
| 8 [MT 2:7] "When my soul was failing from me, I remembered the Lord; and may my prayer come to You, into Your holy temple. 9 [MT 2:8] Those who observe vanities and lies have abandoned their own mercy. 10 [MT 2:9] But I, with a voice of praise and thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You; whatever I have vowed, I will pay to You for [my] salvation to the Lord." |
The Deliverance
| 11 [MT 2:10] And it was commanded to the sea monster, and it cast Jonah out upon the dry land. |
