  1. The imperfect is made of these four elements: augment, stem, thematic vowel, endings

The Augment

  1. The augment adds ε at the beginning of the word.
  2. The augment indicates that the tense is in the past time.
  3. When a verb begins with a consonant, a simple ε is placed in front to make a new syllable.
    1. βάλλω = I am throwing
    2. ἔβαλλον = I was throwing
  4. When a verb betins with a vowel, the augment joins with the vowel to make a longer vowel
    1. ε + α = η thus ἀκούω becomes ἤκουον
    2. ε + ε = η thus ἐγείρω becomes ἤγειρον
    3. ε + ο = ω thus ὀφείλω becomes ὤφειλον
  5. In compound verbs, the augment comes after the preposition and just before the verb stem.
    1. Thus ἐκβάλλω becomes ἐξέβαλλον.
      1. Note that for good sound ἐκέβαλλον changes to ἐξέβαλλον.
    2. If the preposition ends with a vowel, some joining or elision takes place.
      1. Thus ἀποκτείνω (which is ἀπὸ + κτείνω) would become ἀπο + ε + κτείνον
      2. but the οε join together to become just ε with the resulting form: ἀπέκτεινον.
    3. ἀπάγω becomes ἀπῆγον
    4. ἀναβαίνω becomes ἀνέβαινον
    5. καταβαίνω becomes κατέβαινον
    6. ἀποστέλλω becomes ἀπέστελλον
    7. συνάγω becomes σύνηγον
    8. ἐκβάλλω becomes ἐξέβαλλον
  6. Some exceptions to remember:
    1. θέλω becomes ἤθελον
    2. μέλλω becomes ἤμελλον
    3. ἐχω becomes εἶχον

The stem

  1. remove the final omega from the vocabulary word
  2. thus λεγ- is the stem of λέγω

The thematic vowel

  1. The thematic vowel is also called the "variable vowel"
  2. The thematic vowel is ο in front of an ending which begins with μ or ν.
  3. The thematic vowel is ε in front of an ending which does NOT begin with μ or ν.

The imperfect endings

  1. , , none, -μεν, -τε, (or -σαν)
  2. Here's how to learn them. Remember one of the following silly sentences:
    1. Now some blank men tell news (Now some blank men tell news)
    2. Norma says nothing, men tell Norma
    3. Now some space men test new sand
  3. Notice that the first person singular and the third person plural have identical forms.
    1. Only the context will reveal the meaning.

Imperfect meaning

  1. The imperfect tense indicates on-going action in past time
    1. While the present form ἀκούω means I am hearing
    2. the imperfect form ἤκουον means I was hearing
  2. Both the present tense and the imperfect tense describe continuous or on-going action.
  3. The difference is the time of the action.
  4. The action may be continued as in I was hearing
  5. The action may be repeated as in I kept hearing
  6. The action may be customary as in I used to hear
  7. The action may be attempted as in I tried to hear
  8. The action may be initiated as in I began to hear
